5 Things To Think About Before Getting A Horse!

1. What kind of horse is right for you?

This is something that I have made mistakes on before although I have managed to make the horse work.  Finding the right horse for you is so important!  If you don't pick the right horse you aren't going to be happy about your choice in the long run, you and the horse will not be able to progress in what ever you want to do with them, you will not get more confident or may lose confidence and the time and effort will not feel worth it.

Buying a horse that is a first horse if you want more of a challenge isn't going to get you anywhere. Worse yet is buying a horse that isn't a novice ride and you are a novice will make you lose confidence, you won't learn anything and the horse will not behave how you need it too(not the horses fault).  So pick carefully!  I would recommend going to see a horse a few times, taking a trainer and ask for a 3 month trial period.

2.  Money

Horses cost A LOT of money to keep!  Obviously this comes into buying the right horse as well because if you buy a good doer that can stay out all year then that will cost a lot less than a horse that is hard to keep and needs stabled all year round.

Some things to think about for the costs of horses -

  • Livery costs
  • Feed and bedding
  • vet, farrier, dentist e.c.t
  • lessons
  • saddles and any other gear
  • insurance
There is probably other things and I  save up emergency money in case of anything happens and I need to pay something immediately.

3.  Do You Have The Time?

Time is a big part of owning horses.  I spend about 4 hours a day at the horses in the winter and slightly less in the other seasons.  Working full time and owning a horse is very hard so if you decide you want a horse I would consider full livery so you just have to go up and ride and give attention to your horse.
Time is also a problem if you want to spend your time riding as horses need a lot of work to be done out of the saddle and these things are hard work.

4. Where are you going to keep your horse?

Livery yard? Renting a field?  Obviously you can't get a horse if you don't have anywhere to keep it!  Looking for somewhere close to your home can be quite hard in certain areas (and if you are flooded with livery yards close by you are very lucky!!).

You should think about what you need from a livery yard and go see the place a few times.  You need to talk about what kind of livery it is, how much the livery is and any extra costs.  You also need to know any rules and how the livery yard works with grazing, turnout and bringing in times and more!

5. How Are You Going To Treat Your Horse?

Obviously most people are going to treat their horse right but I see a lot of people doing horrible things to their horses like putting a piece of wire in the horses mouth instead of a bit which makes their mouth bleed!  Whipping and smacking the horse in the face.... I hate it!!  So if you are going to buy a horse then please treat him properly.  Horses work so much better if they aren't scared of you.  Also, remember that that horse can quite easily kill you and chooses not to even if you are hurting him!
