How to Care for A Horse The Right Way

Horse Care, you'd think it would be simple, right?

Caring for a horse is easy, right?  Put rugs on when you feel the cold, stable them when er want to and ride when we want to.  Do you see anything wrong with this?  It's our choice what happens and when!  Then when the horse reacts to this THEY are blamed.

At one point I cared for my horses as if they were humans and that is wrong.  Let the horse be a horse!  Treat your horse properly and he will be healthy, happy and well behaved.

1.  Turn out

Yes, I understand!  There's a 10% chance of rain today and he slipped last time he went out and you just want to wrap him up in bubble wrap and keep him in his warm stable!

You may have a horse that is so used to being stabled that he seems like he prefers it, this isn't true.  What horses need is to walk around in a field, for at least 12 hours a day.  I know a lot of people don't have that option but in reality, what other animals would you buy if you couldn't provide them with their basic needs?  Horses NEED to be in a field to walk around as much as they want so they can be happy and healthy.  I can guarantee you, your horse isn't standing at the gate to go back into his stable, he is hungry, lonely or not used to the change.  Treat your horse like a horse, not a human.  They need constant moving, forage, rolling and friends.

2.  Riding

Horses need a routine.  Don't believe me?  You try getting a sensitive horse out of the field for the first time in a month and start riding, you'll get a shock!

Unless you have a super calm horse, chances are he won't appreciate being left in the field for a week straight then ridden for the next week. Yes, Horse's do like a job but it needs to be in a routine.  You should be feeding them, groom them, and ride them at the same time every day.  Sure, some horses will put up with it but that doesn't mean they are happy.  Remember, if your horse shows you that they aren't happy, that is a good thing because you can change.

3.  Nutrition

Sometimes feeding the best possible diet for your horse means it costs a lot more.  If you are new to feeding horses, paying for an animal nutritionist will work out a lot better than paying for vet bills!  I at one point, thought that cheap food must be the same as expensive food, right?  Wrong, a good quality horse food and supplements will pay for itself in the form of your horse's health.
